Square or rectangular extendable table: which one should you choose?

An extendable table allows you to transform a space in an instant, adapting it to different times of the day and social occasions. The shape of the tabletop is one of the key aspects to consider: whether square or rectangular, each shape creates a different relationship with the room and influences the way the table is experienced.

The LAGO collection offers two solutions: the square-shaped Loto Extendable Table and the rectangularAir Extendable Table. Two distinct interpretations, united by integrated extension mechanisms and a design that successfully combines functionality with a sense of visual lightness.

Square extendable table: balance and transformation

The square extendable table creates a sense of order and symmetry, enhancing rooms with a regular layout and more intimate dining areas. Its geometry encourages a balanced arrangement of seating and maintains a strong central presence within the space.

The Loto Extendable Table reinterprets this shape through four extensions that unfold symmetrically from the sides of the tabletop. A harmonious transformation that allows for up to four additional seats, whilst preserving the table’s balance and proportions even when fully extended.

Rectangular extendable table: versatility and lightness

The rectangular extendable table fits naturally into spacious dining rooms, open-plan spaces and long, narrow rooms. Its shape makes it easy to arrange seating and extend the available surface area in line with the room’s layout.

In the LAGO Air Extendable Table, the Wildwood oak top appears to float in space, supported by almost imperceptible tempered glass legs. The concealed extension mechanism allows you to add up to four seats, whilst maintaining the visual lightness that characterises the design.

How the mechanism of an extendable table works

The mechanism of an extendable table allows the tabletop surface to be extended using one or more extension leaves, which may be integrated into the frame or stored separately, depending on the model.

In the LAGO Air Extendable Table, the frame containing the extension panel slides out like a drawer thanks to a system of magnets. The tabletop transforms with a simple, fluid movement, without the need for tools.

In the LAGO Loto Extendable Table, on the other hand, the four side extensions open symmetrically, expanding the surface area without altering the table’s geometric form.

Square or rectangular table: which shape should you choose?

The choice depends on the proportions of the room and how the space is used on a day-to-day basis.

In a long, narrow dining room, a rectangular extendable table follows the layout of the room and allows you to make the most of its depth. In a kitchen, a cosy dining nook or a room with a regular layout, a square extendable table creates a neat and balanced composition.

With the Air Extendable Table and the Loto Extendable Table, LAGO reinterprets rectangular and square geometries through transformable, lightweight pieces of furniture that adapt naturally to different ways of living.
