Pasticceria Giotto

Architect Michele Gambato

The professional patisserie studio at Padua’s Due Palazzi prison has opened its first shop in Corso Milano, the main street running through the city centre. At the project definition stage, parallels between Pasticceria Giotto’s values and LAGO’s design philosophy soon came to light. The patisserie is committed to passing on the art of bakers’ confectionery as a way of bringing about positive social change, while LAGO’s aim is to redesign living spaces to promote wellbeing, both on a personal and societal level. This is what led Giotto’s cooperative Work Crossing to choose furniture by LAGO, with plans by architect Michele Gambato. The aim is to create somewhere as unique as the project the shop represents.

The two pre-existing units have been renovated to create a spacious, informal setting both as somewhere for customers to buy products but also as somewhere to sit down and eat in. The café tables are positioned along the length of the large windows, creating a sociable feel even from the outside. As customers walk in, there’s a lounge area featuring comfy sofas with a lighter-than-air design. This same feel continues with the display shelving which runs around the edge of the space.

We opted for a modular LAGO design, so as to build something new and carefully curated down to the finest details, to satisfy the needs of the customer. This is how we came to the large counter design made entirely of glass, which gently slopes towards the customer to accentuate the view of the products on display. The glass finish is eye-catching and works well with the other glass features in the rest of the space.

The feel we wanted for the interiors was both serious and professional, but also exclusive, designed to exalt the qualities of Giotto’s artisan products. It features soothing tones that sit perfectly alongside the elegant packaging designs, leaving plenty of room for the real stars of this retail space. Versatile products, sophisticated materials, and social purpose and meaning: these are what give this project its aesthetic stamp, showcasing the infinite design possibilities available when furnishing a retail space with LAGO.
