On one side, the sun sparkles on the sea; on the other, Mt Etna dozes. This is where, at the foot of the biggest volcano in Europe, you will find Monaci delle Terre Nere, a design-driven, eco-organic-certified country boutique hotel. The perfect place for relaxing immersed in the colours and fragrances of citrus groves and jasmine, this new LAGO WELCOME has the soul of a modest, unpretentious mountain hut, made unique by the extraordinary energy of the place.
The hotel is in a typical aristocratic Sicilian residence dating to 1800, where traditional architecture combines with contemporary art and design. The estate’s twenty-four hectares host 20 guest rooms, spread between the main building and the suites. The project developed out of a desire to preserve the historical and local identity of the place and bring new life to the private aristocratic home, which is the central part of the hotel. The suites are located in a newly-built structure nevertheless designed to be in line with the historical identity of the place. The other rooms are in a rural building made of lava stone, built in 1730, with a garden and view of the sea.
The choice of furnishings for the interiors was dictated by a desire to enhance elements of the original architecture through contrast. In the guest rooms, illuminated beds suspended on a single leg and wall-mounted wardrobes with fabric doors provide an element of surprise, creating a magical and timeless atmosphere. The same approach led the choice for the bathrooms of the Wildwood Depth washbasin, a window of water that brings a touch of surprise to everyday rituals. The result is an uncommon dialogue between tradition, flavours, fragrances and new contemporary languages with the power to excite even the most world-weary guests.
